The
past 2010 elections revealed dramatic scenes in the Philippine political arena.
All developments were documented on national TV, and are now considered
historical footprints. The 2010 National Elections was launched with the issue
on PCOS machines that successfully automated the once manual polling.
1. Manny Villar, who was a running for presidency
came up with a series of TV commercials. All were a hit on TV, especially the
jingle which was inspired by Villar’s childhood. The accountant turned
politician used colored orange as his official shade, which was also used by
the once ousted President Joseph Estrada.
2. Benigno Aquino had no intention to run for
presidency (as per prior publicity). But
when her mother Corazon Aquio, he was inspired to sign his Certificate of
Candidacy. The Yellow banner was raised and groups joined his battle against
the current head of the country who happens to be his teacher back in tertiary school.
3. Loren Legarda was running for Vice President but
lost to Jejomar Binay. She had outstanding political advertisements that
reached millions of Filipino homes in good taste. She appeared motherly with her
environmental advocacy. However, she was first criticized for being a political
butterfly.
4. Gilbert Teodoro used color green to spice up his
campaign taste. As the administration’s candidate, he was pressured to win the presidential
election but reported to have lacking support from the current president. His
Unique Selling Proposition was his being a blend of talent and skill. Maybe he
was overqualified that he lost to the son of the democracy icon.
5. Jejomar Binay was popularly known to run for
presidency but gave way to Estrada’s attempt of regaining the Malacanang
Palace. He opened an advertisement showing how pleasant it is to be a resident
of Makati, where he is the mayor. He won the polls, after all efforts to steal
the spotlight from old national politicians.
7. Richard Gordon who was running for presidency had
a hard-core TV commercial. The advertisement on how Subic flourished under his
leadership was passionate. The background music was intense and the pictures
undeniably explained all the struggles he did for his home town. He is
popularly known as the head of Philippine National Red Cross and government
agencies. Still, he lacked more votes.
While the politicians were arguing with each other
about early campaigning and other possible frauds that each was doing, the TV
and radio networks were all rejoicing. During elections, media groups gain from
selling their commercial spots. After the elections, Villar was reported to have topped the list of TV ads spender.
